On a chilly morning Mary Farrell, prepared for her morning commute in Winona, Minn. She buttoned up a warm peacoat, wrapped a scarf about her neck, cinched a bike helmet to her noggin and pedaled down a side street on her way home last week. About the same time it was announced, the city of Winona received the bronze level "Bicycle Friendly Community" award from the League of American Cyclists.

It is remarkable! In the early part of the 19th Century, bicycles became a popular and affordable mode of transportation in crowed cities and urban areas. Then as the gasoline engine came into play in the late 1800's, bike manufactures like Harley-Davidson, Indian, Pierce-Arrow, Peugeot and Victory, just to name a few, adapted their frames for gas power. This made way for the conversion of horse carriages to the automobile. Now in the 21st century, a new breed of bicycle manufactures are ready to introduce you to the Velomobile.

The MN High School Cycling League is heading south to Mt. Kato, in Mankato, Minn. for the final race and season championship this Sunday, October 27. As the temperatures drop, the competition is heating up for the 26 teams in the MN League. Racing will be going on all day - starting at 10 a.m., with the ladies, Noon for the boys and stay to watch Varsity riders battle it out at 2 p.m. A full action-packed day - Get ready Mt. Kato!

Of all the complaints that cyclists have about cycling, butt pain/numbness has got to be the biggest. While it's become very common to see bike saddles with a cut-out section in the middle, that's more for relieving pressure specifically on the crotch area (you know what I'm talking about). California chiropractor and triathlete Vincent Marcel, has extended that cut-out and the result, his Infinity Seat, is said to be very easy on the bum.

Last Tuesday, October 15th the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) announced the status of cities throughout the Country that qualified as a Bike Friendly Community (BFC). This Bicycle Community program helps communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation network and then benchmarks their progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. With this year’s award winners, there are now 291 Bicycle Friendly Community honorees in 48 States.

50 to 100 kids from Pleasantview Elementary in Suak Rapids, Minn. walked and biked to school on Wednesday, October 9th as part of National Bike or Walk to School Day.

Over the last month or so I have been toying around with the idea of buying a bicycle - it would be my first bike in almost 20-years. So what has spurred my renewed interest in biking, after all of this time without? Mostly it has been my move to San Francisco and time spent with the eco-friendly Movoto Real Estate bloggers. See, I come from a land called Texas—where everything is spread out and everyone needs a car. San Francisco, like other BFC cities,is rated among the best for pedal pushers.

Close to 300 racers gathered under a brilliant blue sky and charged over the hills of Whitetail Ridge, in River Falls, Wisc. for the Minnesota High School Cycling League’s mountain bike racing program, on October 13. Whitetail Ridge, a favorite of MN League student-athletes, did not disappoint with its rolling trails through a dense gorgeous fall forest. Race Event #5 is the State Championships, at Mt. Kato, in Mankato, Minn., October 27th.
