The DNR has just announce that the east/west trail between Lanesboro and Whalan has recently been re-paved and will be reopened this week for riding all the way to Houston. Over the next month, eight culverts on the trail from Whalan to Rushford will be replaced. This may cause some short delays in August and riders may need to walk their bicycle through the construction areas, in preparation for the Taste of the Trail in September. On three Saturdays in September, the Root River Trail System will feature local food, artisans, entertainment and fun during the annual trail wide event, "Taste of the Trail".
Taste of the Trail is similar to many “Taste of …“events in many towns all over the Midwest. In this case, the towns, along the Root River trail system are focusing their attention on all the delicious food you will find in Southeast Minnesota over three consecutive Saturdays, in September.
Taste of the Trail is designed to show off the abundance of food and activities along both sections of the Root River trail system, From Harmony to Fountain and from Lanesboro to Houston. Each town along the trail will include its own growers, producers, restaurateurs and artisans to offer samples of their products and goods.
The towns will participate according to this schedule:
September 7: Rushford, Rushford Village, Houston
September 14: Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson
September 21: Preston, Harmony, Fountain.
At great detination to tie in a Fall weekend bike ride, the Taste of the Trail hours on each Saturday are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sampling will take place at participating businesses and/or at a central location in each town.
From lefse in Rushford, to homemade pie in Whalan, trail enthusiasts will find a diverse variety of delightful, palate-pleasing tastes along the trail in each town. Local talent and entertainers will showcase how to have a good time in the Trail Towns of the Root River.
