Just three months after suffering a severe spinal injury, trials rider extraordinaire Martyn Ashton has released the second Road Bike Party video. This amazing six-minute compilation of jaw-dropping stunts further bends the rules of what one can do on a road bike, say for instance ride up a tree or jump a tennis court net.
The new clip easily eclipsed 500,000 views on the first day, and is surely headed to the lofty heights of its predecessor. The first video in the series pulled in over 9 million sets of eyeballs on YouTube since its release in 2012 and as is still going strong. In both videos, Ashton swaps his customary trials bike for a swanky Colnago C59 Disc roadster. In early September, Ashton suffered a tragic accident during a bicycle trials demo at a Moto GP event in England, dislocating his T9 and T10 vertebrae, which left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. It also cast doubt as to whether the second video in the Road Bike Party would ever be finished.
But thanks to close friends Danny MacAskill and Chris Akrigg (who both appear in the new video), Ashton and videographer Robin Kitchin completed the film.
“It’s very different to what I planned, but I’m really starting to love it and care for it,” Ashton said. “It’s a brilliant collection — you can lose the fact that we’re on a road bike as it just looks like a great piece of riding. The first Road Bike Party was all about it being a road bike but this one, the road bike doesn’t get a chance — the stuff that we do collectively is beyond what would be ‘normal’ for a trials bike. It’s exceptional.”
